The need for bridging education gaps has never been so important.
According to the former UK Education Minister Elizabeth Truss that the UK teenagers were missing out on technical degree courses like science and engineering due to lack of adequate mathematics skills. In the UK, mathematics is only compulsory up to GCSE and currently only about 15% of students continue maths study afterwards. Moreover, the market research has confirmed that the UK education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is at risk because there are insufficient numbers of home students interested in them. As a result, these degree courses have to be filled up by international students. The Imperial College, London, for example, recruited a large proportion of overseas students onto the electrical engineering course in 2012 simply because they could not get enough home students to fill seats.
Apart from the absence of student interest and lack of home students with adequate maths skills, UK university applications are widely experiencing a fall since 2013, especially for most competitive university courses. According to The Telegraph, number of aspiring students for Oxbridge courses and other highly competitive degrees such as medicine has fallen by almost five percent. Kevin Gilmartin, of the Association of School and College Leaders, said: “It is worrying to see that the number of UK 18-year-olds applying for the most competitive university courses has fallen at a time when the 18-year-old population is increasing. ”
In the meanwhile, demand from international students wishing to pursue higher education in the UK remains high, and China is the firecracker driven this demand. According to the UK government report published on 15 July 2022, there were 605,100 overseas students across all types of UK higher education institutions. This was an increase of 109,000 since 2018/19 and meant the Government’s target of 600,000 international students by 2030 was met 10 years early. China sends the most students to the UK, just over 97,000 in 2020/21; this number has risen by 82% since 2011/12 despite a fall in 2020/21.
China has been one of the longest-standing and most reliable sources for UK international student intakes, but not just for higher education, the demand among younger Chinese students starting their foreign education at the junior high school level has been surging since 2010. The Independent Schools Council reports that over 37% of international pupils whose parents live overseas enrolled in boarding schools in the UK were from China. A survey conducted by UK Boarding School’s Association in 2022 revealed that the UK remains the top destination for Chinese parents choosing a boarding education for their children. Experts have predicted that the implications of surging demand among younger Chinese students in the years ahead are far-reaching with considerable opportunities for agencies, tour operators, and educators alike.
