Steady Chinese middle-class growth and enormous increase in Chinese purchasing power has led a new wave of Chinese investment rolling across the world, in particularly the large cities of European countries, such as London.
Statistics showed that Chinese direct investment into Europe tripled to $3bn between 2006 and 2009, tripled again to nearly $10bn in 2011. In 2012, Chinese investment in Europe hits the record high, totalled $12.6 billion, up nearly 26% over 2011. EU and China trade has also increased dramatically in recent years. With EU as China’s biggest trading partner and China as EU’s 2nd largest trading partner, China and Europe now trade well over €1 billion ($1.3 billion) a day, according to European Commission.
As a major international trading power, having the sixth largest economy in the world and the third largest in Europe, the UK is China’s leading trade and investment destination in Europe. With few trade barriers, the UK also serves as the entry market for ambitious Chinese companies into the European Union.
On the other hand, China, as the second largest economy and biggest exporter in the world, has strong demand for products and services that improve productivity and business efficiencies, and thus offers a huge opportunities for UK companies. According to the UK “Government Policy Towards China”, published by House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee in July 2013 that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) are working hard to promote UK exports and attract inward investment. The FCO China network has been allocated with an additional £4 million investment to increase staff numbers in order to increase outreach activity in China’s second and third tier cities and giving UK a bigger presence in China.
