The hope and dreams of our children are blueprint of our future for which education is the key. As an alliance of people to serve and help young people, particularly those in the UK and China, Live Our Dreams is committed to bridge China-UK education across primary, secondary, further and higher education levels, and help individual students to build solid foundations in living their dreams and aspirations through a rich, colourful and successful education experiences in the UK. The need for bridging education gaps has never been so important.
According to the UK Education Minister Elizabeth Truss that the UK teenagers were missing out on technical degree courses like science and engineering due to lack of adequate mathematics skills. In the UK, mathematics is only compulsory up to GCSE and currently only about 15% of students continue maths study afterwards. Moreover, the market research has confirmed that the UK education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is at risk because there are insufficient numbers of home students interested in them. As a result, these degree courses have to be filled up by international students. The Imperial College, London, for example, recruited a large proportion of overseas students onto the electrical engineering course in 2012 simply because they could not get enough home students to fill seats.
Apart from the absence of student interest and lack of home students with adequate maths skills, UK university applications are widely experiencing ‘steepest fall for 30 years’ according to the Guardian. The fall has been partly blamed on the increased tuition fees. Demand for 2013 university places from home and the EU students have plummeted by 57,000, leaving many universities including top institutions with thousands of empty places, which cost them thousands of millions of pounds in lost fees. The Russell Group, for example, which represents 24 universities including Oxford, Cambridge, University College London and the London School of Economics, had a shortfall of 11,500 students according to Prof. Sir Howard Newby, vice-chancellor of Liverpool University. These universities have to rely on intake of students from outside the EU.
In the meanwhile, demand from international students wishing to pursue higher education in the UK remains high, and China is the firecracker driven this demand. According to statistics of UK Council for International Student Affairs, there were total 435,230 international students in UK higher education in 2011/12 which made up 14% of full-time undergraduate degree students, 69% of full-time taught postgraduates, and 48% of full-time research degree students. Within these groups, China is the number one non-EU country sending 78,715 students. Moreover, Chinese students are very good at maths. Among 65 countries, China outperformed many more advanced countries in mathematics at international education Pisa tests in 2009, because all parents and children in China regard maths as the number one subject in schools. And also, most Chinese students are encouraged to pursue college degree courses in science, technology and engineering after graduating from high school.
China has been one of the longest-standing and most reliable sources for UK international student intakes, but not just for higher education, the demand among younger Chinese students starting their foreign education at the junior high school level has been surging since 2010. The Independent Schools Council reports that nearly 10,000 (over 37%) of 25,912 international pupils whose parents live overseas enrolled in boarding schools in the UK in 2013 were from China. Experts have predicted that the implications of surging demand among younger Chinese students in the years ahead are far-reaching with considerable opportunities for agencies, tour operators, and educators alike.
